MY OPINION!!

1) Why are we publishing the Burtonian on the web rather than in print?
We are publishing the Burtonian on the web rather that in print because we figured it would be easier to use and we can publish more stories without having to wait for the paper to be printed out. We can upload new stuff as the new news come to us and people can access it easier since it’s the Web 2.0 generation.
2) What power does writing (especially for a school paper) give you?
The power that writing gives me is the power to speak my mind and let it is heard to people around my school and community. It also allows me to inform my community on what’s been going on and what new things they need to know about and be aware about.
3) What issue(s) are you most concerned with and that you want to do something about?
The issue that I’m most concerned about is the one we are having with the economy. I’m concerned about our economy because we are the ones that will have to live through this crap we’re in and we’re most likely going to have to fix it. The other issue that I’m concerned about is the Prop 8. I want people to accept gay marriage and let them know that there’s nothing wrong with it.

WEB 2.0!

The way web 2.0 has changed my life is by letting me communicate to my friends and family without having to call them and speaking. I can just contact them through AIM. I dont have a facebook or myspace but that can help people by just letting people know what you've been up to without actually having to tell them. The way it can continue to change our lives is by having messages online and ads to inform us what's going on without reading the newspaper and watching tv to find out. Everything you need is basically on the internest now and it can save us time by allowing us to check up whats going on anytime we're available. The impact on the news media is that everyone is starting to use the internet to do commercials and ads because they know more and more people are on the internet instead of watching tv and reading. Obama used Web 2.0 because he knows most of the younger generation gets their information from the internet so he was smart to use it because it did get out to the younger generation and I believe it did help him out a lot with the campaign. He was also smart enough to get a lot of the celebrities to help him with the campaign because younger people now a days listen to celebrities more and they helped him mad a ad or commercial and it was posted on youtube so everyone can see it. Sooner or later, most of the media we see now will be accessed on the internet and noone will really need the tv or magazines. Overall, Web 2.0 has helped everyone a lot and it's going to keep helping everyone in the future.

ELECTION 2008!

The results for the 2008 presidential election came out and our new president is Barak Obama. Here are some pictures of him winning. http://graphics8.nytimes.com/images/2008/11/04/us/05campaign1050_600.JPG ^Picture

Some of the California props that passed were 1, 2, 3, 8, 9, 11, 12. The way I felt when Obama won was excitment and happiness. The prop that I was upset that passed was prop 8 which was on same sex marriage. I know some people who are gay and they were upset that it passed because what gives us the right to tell gay people if they can marry or not. The way I see it is what they do shouldn't matter to us because you don't see them saying straight people can't marry. It was a dumb prop that passed and I was upset that it did. I hope that there will be another prop to rebuttle it. I'm pretty sure America was happy about Obama winning because we really did need a change. Under the hands of the Republicans, the United States has been under deep boo boo for the past 8 years, starting with the 9/11 attack and now the economic crisis. I'm sure people all around America is really happy with how things went with the election. I learned that democracy can work sometimes and in this election, it showed that it did. Most people wanted Obama, and they got him. I know that the American people were also getting sick of the Republican and how they were running things, I've learned that they can also be smart enough to choose the right president around this time. What I've learned about journalism is that we can write what we like on elections and we can report what happens and how it happened. We can bring people information on what went on and how it happened during the elections this year.

INVESTIGATING A STORY GAME!

the purpose of the game was to teach you how to investigate a story. they were trying to teach you to expose the truth, but make sure that your facts are correct first. dont make hasty moves and ask the right questions. the most important thing to do as a reporter is to expose the truth and let people know what's going on in the world. the main motivation in today's mainstream media is to also expose the truth, but sometimes i feel like they're not focusing on more important issues such as the war or the actual candidate, they're more interested in people's bad traits to make things more interesting. what i feel that a reporter should do it to focus on things that are important in today's society and to expose the truth to people so they know what's going on because theres ALWAYS something fishy going on. reporters should report the truth and not do it for the money or fame.

NEWS

The topic I want to talk about this week is the one on "Joe the plumber". He was getting so much fame from the incident when he talked to Obama when he went to his street to do some campagining. Mr. Joe went up the Obama and asked if he was going to raise his taxes because his small business is making 250,000 - 280,000 a year and he was worried that his tax raises will affect him. Little did we know, Mr. Joe, was a LIAR!! he is not a LICENSED plumber and he owes back taxes in the state of Ohio. So when we were thinking too much about this man, we were losing focus on what really mattered, the actual candidates. I believe that we should focus more on the election and less on the people/media that tries to make little things grow big. We wasted our time listening to a LIAR.

ELECTIONS!

For this year's school election, I was supporting kevin dang for senior class president. He is a close friend of mine and I've known him since freshman year. I believe that he is a good candidate for this position because I know him personally and I know that he will make good changes to this school. He's a very dedicated person and has always worked hard for what he wants. He's a guy that everyone likes because he don't like confrontations so he try to have more friends than enemies. He's a funny guy and he has a great personality. I know he'll be a good candidate for this position and I can't wait to see what he does to our school and our senior class. I wish him all the best!...

FIRST AMMENDMENT

The first ammendment means a lot to me. The reason why it means so much to me is because, this is what makes America a free country. Countries like China and Vietnam, don't allow people to say what they want to say and do what they want to do. The first ammendment also allows us to believe in what ever religion we want, protest if we want, and allows us of freedom of press. Being in a journalism class, we have to seek the truth and tell people about it. If we didn't have freedom press and freedom of speech, we would'nt be able to write what we want to and publish it. Besides just being in a journalism class, saying what I want on a regular basis means a lot to me. I talk a lot with my friends and family and if I don't have the right to say what I want to say, i'll probably die. I'm a type of person that says what on my mind and I won't really care who hears it. Speaking out is what makes the whole world works. If we didn't speak out about our president, we would probably have another bad president like McCain. If we don't speak out, we'll probably let people like Bush run the country again. Speaking out is what makes this country what it is. Overall, the first ammendment means a lot to me.

OBSERVATIONS

`When I’m in the cafeteria with my friends, all I see is wild beast running around. Sometimes, I even see people throwing carrots and food at each other. One time, someone threw a carrot and it hit my friend and I was panicking because I don’t like stuff being thrown at me. I only go into the café because my friends all hang out there and we always get food from the beanery. If I had a choice, I’d rather not go, but because I don’t see some of my friends during the day, that’s the only time I get to catch up with them. Sometimes I wish there were tighter security in the cafeteria so people won’t get hurt and food wouldn’t be thrown around like it was nothing. Overall, the cafeteria reminds me of a wild zoo, where all the animals are going crazy because they see food. WHOEVER IS READING THIS, DON’T GET OFFENDED, I’TS JUST A OBSERVATION I SEE, AND IM NOT TRYING TO CALL YOU ANIMALS, ITS JUST A COMPARISON.. AS LONG AS YOU KNOW YOU’RE NOT A ANIMAL, YOU HAVE NOTHING TO WORRY ABOUT.

I DONT LIKE HURRICANES

i would like to write about the hurricane that happened in new orleans. I feel like its a tragedy and people need to know what's going on with the hurricane and the people that live over there. I was reading a article about them online and i even posted a comment. Basically, there was a hurricane named gustav that hit new orleans. the people there were more prepared then when katrina hit. people evacuated and now, the govenor said it was safe to go back. its really tragedy that the people of new orleans have to go through the same thing like they did a while ago. they were just recovering from it and now, they have to experience another one. people's houses have been torn down and almost all of new orleans is destroyed. so people need to know whats going on. and this is what i'd like someone to talk about when we start our paper.

SOURCE:http://community.nytimes.com/article/comments/2008/09/04/us/04Gustav.html

I COMMENTED!

poor new orleans people. i feel bad for them because after katrina, they have to experience another tradegy. <-- NEW YORK TIMES

this is bad. i feel like people should'nt even care about what's going on in her family matters. people should worry more about the campaign and not about her family. <-- NEWSVINE.

Article

The topic I will like to talk about is the shooting that happened in front of our school on the last days of the 08 year. I only remember having to stay in school because they wanted to lock the school down to make sure our surroundings were clear and safe to go home. That was a very scary moment for all of us because they didn’t catch the person that did it yet so he or she could have been wondering anywhere. I want to write about this topic because it happened right in front of our school and this matter should be addressed. there wasn't a source that i could find on this, but i just wanted to talk about this matter and just get to the bottom of what happened and who was behind it. someone should really cover this story because it happened just outside of our school.
